A concrete road, step by step

Here's an explanation of what's going on in the Go! banner movie for this issue.

Front-end loader moving aggregate at a concrete plant. Backhoe among piles of rock and sand
Concrete being mixed and loaded on trucks at a concrete plant. Truck with its headlights on is receiving mixed concrete. Several semis lined up at a concrete mix plant
Concrete being delivered to a road construction site (an overlay of an existing pavement) and poured in front of a paver. The truck has a big paddle inside that rotates. The truck's box tilts up to dump the concrete (bottom photo). Truck delivers a load of wet concrete
Concrete falling out a chute in back of a truck, ready to go through the paver
Belt placer (left) does primary leveling of concrete in bigger operations. Paver is running behind the belt placer. A belt placer on the left, followed by a slipform paver.
Close-up view of a paver doing final forming of concrete. Front side of a slipform paver
Paver moving from right to left. 3 men in safety vests observe a paving operation
Burlap hanging from the bridge adds brushed texture to the surface. The bridge is for workers to smooth accidents and move across wet pavement. Smooth concrete has burlap dragged over it, followed by a machine spraying curing compound
White metal teeth are tining, a process that adds surface texture. White spray is a curing compound. Close-up view of spraying curing compound on wet concrete
Using diamond-tipped blades, joints are sawed in concrete to control cracking. Man kneels by a large saw the size of a push lawnmower to change a blade
The final product. The thin concrete overlay has numerous saw cuts so that the smaller slabs can flex without cracking. A 2-lane concrete highway with many smaller slabs visible due to saw cuts
