From the editor:
Where “green” is king
My son shouts “Ba!”, waves his arms, and kicks his legs in the stroller. The street is empty, but he recognizes that deep engine roar: a bus. It rounds the corner and stops right outside our apartment building in Madison, Wisconsin.
He’s not the only one excited about buses in Madison. Because here, “green” is king:
- Bikers stay on the streets even when it’s below freezing.
- People drive hybrids, diesels, electrics, teeny-tiny cars…you get the idea.
- One of the most popular neighborhoods is one of the most walkable: only a few short blocks to a local grocery co-operative and lots of local shops and restaurants.
- And, of course, the buses. Even the mayor rides the bus around the city if he’s not biking.
This issue of Go! is all about sustainability. Read about how
- wind turbines are moved around the country
- bamboo is being used to build bridges
- heat from pavements can create energy
- water can be used to power trains
Plus, don’t forget to try 3 different ways to create ethanol (and tell us what you find out!).
Want more? Check out these oldies but goodies:
- You get what you pay for (sustainable transportation funding)
- Powering up with poop and plants
- Shine down on me: Solar cars
Even though you probably don’t shout and kick every time you see a bus, I hope this issue gives you something to get excited about.
Enjoy!
